I developed hydrocephalus from concussions during the ’81 Super Bowl XVI season and underwent emergency VP Shunt brain surgery. I survived 2 more shunt surgeries in 82, and 5 more during a 10-month period in 86 – 87. I have now undergone 9 NFL-caused brain surgeries (including that emergency VP shunt surgery), 33 years of gran mal seizures and was on my way out 4 years ago according to my primary care providers. I was told I had frontal lobe dementia, needed to turn in my driver’s license, file for SSI and get my finances in order at age 51.
Instead I began the first of my 241 hyperbaric oxygen treatments in 2010 and started taking Dr Barry Sears SeaHealth Plus anti oxidants and Omega 3 fish oils. My micro cognitive memory scores have been shown to have improved 15.3% after 3 yrs of treatments and I’m now 55. I also quit all 4 of the dementia meds they had me on: Arricept, Lexapro, Namenda, and Resperidal.
