Several months ago I had to leave my family and move to Southern California to get treatment on my NFL brain injury at B.R.A.I.N. (Brain Rehabilitation And Injury Network). B.R.A.I.N. is a non-profit foundation founded by Sue and Jerry Rueb after losing their own daughter to the streets for years due to an undiagnosed traumatic brain injury. One of the many, many services B.R.A.I.N. provides is a free F.B.I. (Friends of Brain Injury) meeting and potluck dinner every Tuesday night, which includes a guest speaker, activities and important information.
We have over 150 attendees at some of the F.B.I. meetings which is where I met Amily Hung and her father Mike. Two days after I met Amily a few weeks ago, I received this email from her. Keep in mind, Amily only has use of her right ring finger. Otherwise she is totally paralyzed.
Hello! My name is Amily. I am the girl in the wheelchair with the big smile.Have you seen the movie ‘memento’? It’s about a guy with short term memory loss. Do you or your doctor know of any way to heal the holes in your brain? AmilyAfter Amily emailed me the above correspondence, I asked her to send us her bio and we would post on the blog. Here it is in Amily’s words.hi, my name is Amily Hung. I was studying Environmental Sciences at UC Berkeley when I had a brain aneurysm in March of 2003, just before my graduation. I’ve been a quadriplegic since then and I lost my ability to speak, but I am going to physical and speech therapy, and believe in getting better! thank you for believing in me, George. It means a lot to me!
